Sample cards often look more certain than the evidence behind them. An explicit unknown field keeps missing information visible and prevents a useful visual sample from becoming an unsupported material claim.
Name what is not verified
The unknown might be the coating chemistry, exact material grade, prior treatment, supplier batch, or storage history. Write it directly on the record. Do not replace missing supplier information with a guess based on appearance.
Limit the conclusion to the observation
Describe contrast, legibility, or visible surface change only under the documented test conditions. Avoid turning one sample into a guarantee for a category of materials. Similar-looking blanks can behave differently.
Resolve or preserve the unknown
If reliable documentation becomes available, attach it and revise the card with a date. If it remains unavailable, retain the warning and keep the sample out of any reference set that requires confirmed material identity. Follow current operating and safety guidance for every test.
