An unlabeled blank should not become an experiment simply because it fits on the work surface. A written stop rule gives every operator the same response when material identity or coating is uncertain.
Make the rule unambiguous
State that work pauses until the material and surface treatment are identified through a reliable source and confirmed compatible with current instructions. Move the item to a labeled review area so it cannot drift back into the ready-to-use stock.
Record who clears the item
Use a short material card with the source, identifying information, date reviewed, and the person responsible for the decision. If adequate information is unavailable, keep the item out of the workflow. Appearance, seller wording, or a past result on a similar-looking blank is not enough.
This stop rule complements—not replaces—current requirements for guarding, ventilation, protective equipment, workspace controls, and attended operation. Every team member should know how to stop work and raise a question.
