Before placing the design itself, mark the areas where you do not want a mark. A simple paper grid can separate edges, hardware, texture changes, and the intended focal area. It gives a maker a calm starting point without treating a sketch as a finished result.
Keep the grid with the artwork version
Note the reference image, artwork filename, and the areas intentionally left clear. If the composition changes, make a new grid rather than silently replacing the old note. That makes a later sample easier to compare with the original intent.
Turn the grid into a short review
Ask three questions before moving on: what should be read first, what should remain quiet, and what still needs a physical sample?
