Put the reading order in plain language

Before opening the artwork, write three short words that describe the order in which someone should read the gift: name, date, then icon; or icon, initials, then note. That line is a practical test for whether the layout has a clear starting point.

Build the first preview around that order. If a decorative element competes with the name, move it rather than trying to explain it away. The goal is a reviewable draft, not a finished-material promise.

Keep the proof with the file

Save the three-word note beside the artwork and the preview. It gives a later revision a visible reason for every placement choice. For adjacent workflow ideas, browse the latest /updates/ entries.
