A diode laser may create a visible mark on some coated, painted, anodized, or specially prepared metal surfaces, but “metal engraving” is not one universal result. Bare metal, coating removal, color change, and deep engraving are different processes and should not be treated as interchangeable.
Identify the surface, not only the object
Two tags that look similar may have different coatings, finishes, or base materials. Record the supplier description, surface history, and whether the desired result is removing a coating or changing the underlying material.
Ask what the sample actually proves
A photo can show that one visible result occurred under one setup. It does not automatically prove depth, durability, food safety, repeatability, or compatibility with another blank. Keep an untouched comparison piece and photograph the sample under consistent lighting.
Match the question to the laser type

Use a cautious test record
- Record the exact blank and surface description.
- Confirm the material is appropriate under current guidance.

- Mark the test as a sample, not a customer promise.
- Inspect and record what remains unknown.
