A custom request should leave the normal order queue as soon as it introduces an unreviewed blank, artwork change, unusual placement, or missing approval. Put these orders in a visible exception queue instead of letting them borrow assumptions from routine work.
Name the reason for the hold
Give each exception one owner and one next decision. The label might say material information needed, revised proof required, placement unresolved, or current guidance must be checked. Keep customer wording separate from workshop notes so a request is not mistaken for an approved process.
Return only after review
Move the order back to the main queue only when its artwork version, identified blank, orientation, and approval record agree. If the material or proposed process is unsuitable or uncertain, decline or revise the request rather than testing by guesswork.
An exception queue does not promise turnaround or guarantee an outcome. It gives a small shop a controlled place for questions that could otherwise become remakes. Safety documentation, ventilation, secure positioning, and attended operation remain required for accepted work.
