A stop is only useful if everyone knows who controls the next step. Name the person who can pause the workflow, secure the area, record the condition, and decide whether current guidance allows work to resume.
Define ownership before start
On the job card, write the active operator and the backup contact. List visible stop conditions appropriate to the current documentation and workshop rules. Keep emergency actions clear and accessible; do not bury them inside production notes.
If the material is unknown, ventilation is unavailable, shielding is not in place, or the work cannot be attended as required, stop and resolve the condition before proceeding. Do not improvise around missing safety information.
Record the handoff
When another operator takes over, both people should confirm the current state, open questions, and who now owns the stop decision. A name and time make the handoff reviewable.
