Record what is actually known
Keep the supplier description, purchase reference and any available composition information together. Note whether that information describes the entire object or only one component. A known substrate does not automatically identify an adhesive layer or surface coating.
Use a specific unresolved question, such as whether the supplied sheet includes an additional coating. Avoid substituting a visual guess for documentation. Another maker's photograph of a similar-looking item cannot settle the identity of yours.
Make the hold useful
- Label the stored item as awaiting material identification.
- Record the missing information and where you requested clarification.
- Keep it outside the ready-to-test group until suitability is established through appropriate guidance.
If the information never becomes available, do not resolve the uncertainty by trying a small engraving. A small trial does not establish safe composition. This record is a screening aid, not a compatibility certification. A suitable, identified material still requires the relevant operating instructions and a reviewed setup before any physical test.
