Two blanks can share a base material while behaving differently because one has a coating, finish, or unknown surface treatment. Record the surface as part of the sample identity.
Describe what is known
Label the supplier or source, visible finish, purchase date, and whether the coating is documented or uncertain. Keep coated and uncoated pieces in separate sleeves. Avoid turning appearance into a material claim.
Compare within controlled groups
When testing is appropriate under current operating guidance, compare like with like and change one planned variable at a time. Photograph the blank and result under consistent light. Stop if the material identity, coating, fumes, or safe handling requirements are uncertain.
A sample board is a record of observed pieces, not a promise for every item sold under a similar name.
