A sample photograph can change character when the light or viewing angle changes. Record those two conditions when a photo is made, so a later comparison does not confuse reflection with a change in the sample.
Make the record repeatable
Give each sample a simple ID and photograph the whole piece before taking close views. Write down whether the light is broad or directional and where the camera sits relative to any visible grain. Include an unedited reference when a cropped detail is useful.
Put the material label supplied with the blank in the record, but mark unknown finishes as unknown. Avoid inferring a coating or composition from appearance alone.
Interpret only the observed sample
