A small test card can hold the decisions that are easiest to forget at the bench. It does not need to predict a result. Its job is to make the next test easier to identify, repeat, and discuss.
Give the card four fields
Write the artwork revision, blank label, setup reference, and purpose of the test. Keep the purpose narrow: placement check, legibility review, or comparison sample. A narrow question produces a more useful record than a vague note such as “test one.”
Place the card beside the unmarked blank for the first photo. After the test, add the date and a short observation. Keep observations separate from claims: “visible under side light” records a viewing condition, while “works on every finish” would overreach.
Let the card travel with the sample
If the sample moves to another desk or person, the card preserves its context. Photograph both together before filing them. For a new material or unfamiliar object, confirm compatibility and current operating guidance before any laser work.
