Before drawing a message for a cylindrical object, mark the front-facing area you want someone to see first. A paper wrap or removable guide can give the artwork a clear viewing reference without claiming a final placement result.
Start with the intended view
Write one note for the front, one for the opposite side, and one for any area you prefer to leave quiet. Keep the notes with the artwork version so a later revision still has the same reading direction.
