A sample becomes hard to trust when it is separated from its notes. Put a short identifier on the back or on an attached sleeve as soon as the sample is created.
Link the object to the record
Use a neutral sample ID that points to the dated job record. Record the supplier description, observed surface, file revision, orientation, and any other verified setup notes relevant to the test. Keep claimed material identity separate from what the team can actually observe.
Do not mark a presentation face if that would alter later comparison. For very small or unsuitable pieces, use an individual labeled envelope rather than forcing a mark onto the sample.
Retire uncertain references
If the identifier becomes unreadable or its matching record is missing, move the piece out of the approved reference set. An attractive result without provenance should not silently guide a future job.
