A close-up can preserve surface detail while losing the sample's identity. Starting each test record with the label creates a simple bridge between the object, the file, and later review notes.
Use a two-photo opening
First photograph the sample beside a card containing its internal ID, date, artwork version, and known surface description. Then take the detailed surface view without changing the lighting more than necessary. Keep both images in the same folder.
Record unknowns honestly
If the exact coating, finish, or material history is unknown, write unknown rather than guessing. A visual similarity does not prove identical composition or behavior. Results can vary with the material, finish, artwork, preparation, and setup.
Make comparisons bounded
Compare only records that document the variables relevant to the question. A useful sample library shows context and uncertainty; it does not turn one observation into a broad compatibility claim.
