Two similar-looking test pieces can become difficult to distinguish after their labels are separated. Record the uncertainty immediately instead of assigning identities from which result looks more plausible.
Pause the comparison
Give the uncertain pieces temporary references and photograph them together without claiming which test each represents. Preserve the existing notes and explain where the identification chain broke. Do not overwrite a previous record to make the comparison appear complete.
Check reliable evidence such as original labeled photographs or a documented handling sequence. If that evidence resolves the identities, record how the conclusion was reached. If it does not, keep both samples out of any comparison that depends on knowing their exact conditions.
Rebuild only with a supported setup
A replacement comparison should begin with identified materials and the applicable operating guidance. Label each specimen before it leaves the documented handling process, and keep the result connected to its record. Do not repeat an unknown-material test merely to reproduce a visual effect.
