Record Surface Cleaning Before Comparing Samples

Two visually similar blanks can photograph differently if one has dust, fingerprints, coating residue, or a different cleaning history. Before comparing samples, record whether the surface was left as received or prepared using a method approved for that material.

Label the source, date, and preparation note beside each piece. Do not improvise with unknown cleaners, and confirm material suitability and safe handling before any engraving test. Describe visible differences as observations from that sample rather than broad material guarantees.

The preparation record makes later photos easier to interpret and repeat responsibly. Related sample-review notes are collected in /updates/.
