A sample photograph is more useful when it begins before the mark. Recording the unmarked surface helps reviewers distinguish existing variation from changes seen after a test.
Use repeatable light and framing
Photograph the unmarked area under neutral light with the camera square to the surface. Include a removable job label beside the sample and avoid filters. If the surface has grain, coating variation, scratches, or gloss, capture those details instead of hiding them.
Pair before and after views
Use the same orientation and similar light for the later photograph. Name both files with one sample code. The pair supports a more careful visual comparison, but it does not prove composition, durability, safety, or suitability.
Keep conclusions narrow
Record only what the sample visibly shows under the documented conditions. Confirm material identity with the supplier and follow current safety and operating guidance. Results can change with material, finish, artwork, setup, and environment.
