Lighting can make the same mark appear darker, sharper, or more reflective. Put a labeled control sample beside new work when photographs will be compared across different days or locations.
Keep the reference stable
Choose an archived sample with a known date and source record. Photograph it beside the new sample, using the same camera angle and without beauty filters. Include one wider frame that shows the lighting environment and one closer frame for visible detail.
The control helps interpret photographs; it does not calibrate the laser or prove identical material behavior. Continue to record the new blank's source and conduct the required compatibility and safety checks.
Write observations, not verdicts
Describe what is visible under the recorded light: lower apparent contrast, stronger reflection, or a different edge appearance. Avoid claiming a material or setting is universally better from photographs alone.
