Unknown is a useful status
Create a material log with the source, visible condition, date, and open questions for each unfamiliar blank. Leaving an item marked unconfirmed is more useful than turning a first observation into a broad compatibility claim.
Keep the record with the sample
Place the same short identifier on the photo, the physical sample, and the note. That gives a future reviewer a way to reconnect the observation with its limits. Browse /updates/ for more sample-record guidance.
